Le Saint-Aulin

About

This easy, pleasant loop trail, signposted in white and red, then yellow, takes you close to the Croix de Terride, which marks the junction of several paths, one of which is thought to be an ancient Roman road.

Château de Terride was originally a feudal castle (built before the 10th century). Simon de Montfort captured it in 1209 during the Crusade. Mirepoix's first settlement was on the left bank of the river, on the same side as the fortress known at the time as "de Mirapey", and it wasn't until 1563 that the castle was renamed Terride. The name comes from the barony of Terride, given to Jean de Lévis as a dowry by his wife. In addition to its own strength, the castle's position gave it an immense advantage, as it commanded the road leading from Castelnaudary to the town of Mirepoix, and from there to Foix.
